The Thought that comes true!

Key words that flashed across my mind whenever I hear this country: Vast. Sparse. Harsh. Cold. Beautiful. Traditional. Grand. Far. Architecture.

No second thoughts when CN called and asked if want to consider "Russia" as this June's destination. "An exotic place!" - this was what many described when heard that I'm making a trip there.

Despite of the busy schedule, I set aside a day just to set up this blog (that the frame was created more than 5 years ago). In fact, my excitement grew over those 4 hours when I started to put up the links of places that I'm setting my foot in, in about a month's time!

About the Place...

Russia is the largest country of the world. With its area amounting to 17 million sq. km, it covers 11.5% of the territory of the world. The territory of Russia extends for 10 thousand kilometres, from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Japan Sea in the east. It comprises 11 time zones. The capital of Russia is Moscow. Another very important administrative, business and cultural centre is Saint Petersburg, often referred to as the second, or the northern capital of Russia. There are over a thousand towns and cities in Russia. The largest cities with over 1 million inhabitants each are the following: Moscow (over 9 million), Saint Petersburg (about 4.7 million). Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Omsk, Chelyabinsk, Kazan, Perm, Ufa, Rostov-on-Don, and Volgograd.

Moscow is the heart of Russia, its capital, the business, scientific, cultural and tourist center of the country. For the first time it was mentioned in the chronicles in 1147. Moscow was founded by Yuri Dolgoruky, Prince of Suzdal. A favorable geographical position at the crossing of the most important trade routes, between the Volga and the Oka, facilitated rapid development and growth of the town, which is now the largest city in Russia.

“The Golden Ring of Russia” refers to a ring of ancient Russian towns formed in the northeast by the towns of Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl Zalesskiy, Rostov the Great, Yaroslavl, Uglich, Kostroma, Suzdal, Vladimir, and others. Dozens of architectural, cultural, and historical monuments dated back to the 12th – the 17th century translate to the tourists the spirit of Ancient Russia. Some of them, such as the ensemble of Laura of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius and masterpieces of white-stone architecture of Vladimir and Suzdal, are included into the UNESCO global heritage list. The towns of the Golden Ring also attract the guests by the articles of ancient Russian folk trades. The traditions of Zhostovo painted trays and Palekh varnished cabinets have remained unchanged for decades or even centuries. The Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasants’ Life will tell you of everyday life of the Russians. The Smaller Golden Ring also exists, including historical and cultural monuments of the Vladimir Region, including a unique masterpiece of ancient Russian architects – a snow-white Pokrov-on-the-Nerl Temple.

Saint Petersburg is probably the most romantic city in Russia. Any Russian would agree to that. Old embankments and raised bridges in pink sunset gauze render the city mystique and fine charm. “White nights” turn Saint Petersburg into the city of lovers walking all night long in Dvortsovaya Square and Nevsky Avenue and sitting on the benches in old park alleys of Tsarskoye Selo and the Letniy Sad. When the sculptures are uncovered and the fountains begin to work in Petrodvorets, anyone feels happy looking at that wonderful creation of human mind and human skill. From spring to autumn, several trains are leaving each day Moscow for Saint Petersburg for tourists to get familiar with a wonderful city referred to poetically as “Northern Venice”. Any cultivated man is happy to get familiar with the Mariinsky Theatre of Opera and Ballet, the Hermitage, the Anichkov Bridge and numerous palaces.

Decembrists' Square, St. Petersburg

Decembrists' Square, St. Petersburg is one of the top 10 famous protest plazas (Times Special: http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2047066_2047070_2047109,00.html)

The St. Petersburg plaza, which was dubbed Decembrists' Square following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, recalls an earlier rebellion: the uprising led by mostly well-to-do revolutionaries, many of them army officers, who were in favor of reform and opposed the ascension of Czar Nicholas I. Some 3,000 men massed in the square during the December 1825 revolt, which was violently put down. Five Decembrists were executed, while many more were jailed or sent to waste away in obscurity in Siberia.

Russian Composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (play /ˈpiːtər ˈɪlɨtʃ tʃaɪˈkɒfski/); (Russian: Пётр Ильи́ч Чайко́вский;[a 1] tr. Pyotr Ilyich Chaykovsky) (May 7, 1840 – November 6, 1893[a 2]) was a Russian composer whose works included symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, and chamber music. Some of these are amongst the most popular concert and theatrical music in the classical repertoire. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, which he bolstered with appearances as a guest conductor later in his career in Europe and the United States. One of these appearances was at the inaugural concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1891. Tchaikovsky was honored in 1884 by Tsar Alexander III, and awarded a lifetime pension in the late 1880s.
